Barley Surgery Costs Appeal
Barley entered our care on 6th March and was suffering from very overgrown incisors and weeping eyes. Her previous owners had left her for some time without any veterinary care, and were managing her dental issues through filing the teeth themselves.
Our exotic vets have recommended removal of all 6 front incisor teeth, a series of x-rays to monitor dental health and her jaw. Barley will also need various medications as she recovers.

10th March 2024 - Pain Medication and Recovery Feeding
Barley is doing really well! She is receiving 3 types of pain medication, each administered twice per day, and is also on a daily antibiotic.
She is eating fresh greens, including broccoli florets and spinach, but has yet to return to hay and nuggets. As a result, we continue to offer Critical Care formula through syringe feeding.
See her latest medication and feeding session in the video below.
7th March 2024 - Initial Surgery Completed
Barley has had a successful day in surgery today.
Our vets have successfully removed her front incisors. The bottom teeth, which are the most problematic, appear to have removed in full and, whilst it cannot yet be guaranteed, we believe that the roots have been removed successfully meaning the chances of them growing back are slim. However, her top incisors were in a much more fragile condition, and we cannot be certain that they will not attempt to grow back. We will need to monitor closely - if any of the teeth grow back in place we may need to consider attempting removal again.
Her X-rays have indicated some damage to her back teeth, which are likely a result of misalignment caused by her incisors. This has started having an impact on the jaw, but we are hopeful this will be minimised and perhaps may correct itself as a result of resolving her front dental issues.
Her eye has flushed well during treatment today. It appears that it is likely a side effect of the dental issues.
Depending on how recovery goes, our vet did indicate that there may be a need for long-term pain management, which we will determine as Barley continues to recover.
For tonight, she remains in the care of our vets for observations, and all being well she will return to foster care with us at some point tomorrow.
