Why Hay Comes First
A rabbit should get through a bundle of hay roughly the size of their own body every day, and it needs to be there all the time rather than offered at set meals.
Teeth That Never Stop Growing
A rabbit’s teeth grow continuously throughout life. The long sideways chewing that hay demands is what wears them down evenly. Without it, teeth overgrow into spurs that cut the tongue and cheek, and the rabbit needs repeated dental work under anaesthetic.
A Gut That Must Keep Moving
Fibre keeps the digestive system in motion. When a rabbit stops eating hay the gut can slow and then stop, which is an emergency that can kill within hours and needs immediate veterinary treatment.
Something To Do All Day
Foraging, sorting and chewing through a pile of hay occupies a rabbit for hours. Boredom in rabbits shows up as chewed skirting boards, destroyed bedding and, in bonded pairs, squabbling.

This buys a two kilogram bag of meadow or timothy hay, which is roughly a fortnight of feeding for one rabbit.
This buys a full compressed bale, the format we rely on most. One bale feeds several rabbits for weeks and stores well, which matters when storage space is tight.
This funds a bulk order of hay. It keeps every rabbit in our care fed for about a month and saves us buying in the small quantities that cost more per kilo.
Hay first, herbs & forage daily, nuggets in moderation. Alongside hay we feed fresh leafy greens every day and a measured portion of nuggets. Hay is the part that never stops, which is why we ask for it so often. Consider Regular Giving.
How Your Donation Is Used
Your gift is made to Beloved Rabbits, a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered as SC049128. Donations are received as general funds for the care of rescued rabbits, so we buy hay in the quantities and at the times that make the money go furthest rather than making a separate purchase for each gift.
The amounts above reflect what rabbit hay genuinely costs to buy. If we are well stocked when your donation arrives, it goes to the other everyday costs of feeding and housing rabbits, which means bedding, fresh greens and nuggets.
